Our Story
Richard Buller Wines has a rich heritage of grape growing and wine making that dates back over 100 years.
Winemaking was a leap of faith for Richard Buller’s grandfather, Reginald (Reg) Langdon Buller. After returning from the First World War, a desk job no longer held any appeal, so he spent six months working at the Mildura Winery. Agriculture was an industry he knew very little about, but in 1921, Reg purchased 170 acres of land at Rutherglen, already partially planted under vine. He called the property Calliope, after a ship that had emerged as the sole survivor of an 1889 hurricane.
The vineyard, affectionately known as Cally, weathered some heavy storms over the years, with the second vintage being completely wiped out by hail. However, Reg’s vision for his new enterprise enabled him to sail through the tempests of business and agricultural life, including the Great Depression.
Following a stint in the navy during World War II, Reg left his son Richard (Dick) in charge at Calliope, while he set up a new vineyard and winery near Swan Hill. Dick oversaw substantial growth of the business and its two wineries, along with his wife Val and three sons. He became one of the leaders in the rapidly growing wine industry and was a judge at the Royal Melbourne Show for twenty years. He saw the advent of wine tourism and the newly popular cellar door sales phenomenon.
